HARLOW Town ensured they kept their heads above water with a vital 2-0 win over bottom side Heybridge Swifts in the Ryman League Premier Division.
The win has seen the Hawks soar up to 16th in the table in what has become a congested battle for survival in the lower reaches of the league.
A defeat to Heybridge would have seen the Barrows Farm outfit staring down the barrel on 31 points and sitting second from bottom.
However, as it is, they now sit atop the mini-league that is emerging at the foot of the table, with two points separating 16th and 21st.
Harlow can take solace from the fact that they have played at least two games less than most of their relegation-threatened rivals.
Tuesday’s result helped wipe out the memory of the weekend’s demoralising 5-0 defeat to Hendon, and they will be desperate to take their new-found confidence into this week’s home match with promotion-chasing Staines Town.
Elsewhere, Essex Olympian Senior Division One outfit Buckhurst Hill kept their promotion bid on track with a 3-1 win over mid-table side Ryan last week.
Phil Hernon’s men battled to a 3-1 victory, that sees them keep the pressure on the league’s top dogs Westhamians.
Hill trail the leaders by four points, but they have two games in hand, and with a match coming up against strugglers Leigh Ramblers this weekend, they will be confident of closing the gap even further.
In the same division, Leytonstone travel to fourth-placed Hutton in desperate need of a win to lift them off the foot of the table.
In the Premier Division, Epping scrapped to a 2-2 draw with White Ensign last week, however the threat of relegation still looms as they are just five points off the bottom heading into this week’s clash with Manford Way.
Meanwhile, Debden Sports ensured they kept pace with the Herts Senior County Division One leaders with a 3-1 win over Bedwell Rangers, while they face Mill End Sports on Saturday.
Finally, Loughton enjoyed a 4-0 triumph over Birchanger in the Bishop’s Stortford, Stansted and District Premier Division.
