CONNAUGHT Squash club veteran Averil Murphy recently won her third world championship in Christchurch, New Zealand.
After winning the over 40 and over 55 events in years gone by, Averil showed her skills have not deserted her as she smashed her way past a series of opponents to claim a hat-trick of illustrious titles, in what has been a glittering career.
Averil has competed at the local club in Chingford for more than 50 years.
She first tried her hand at tennis but soon switched to squash and even reached a career high of number six in the national rankings.
After previous triumphs in Holland and Helsinki, Finland, Averil flew to the other side of the world to compete in Christchurch, and she took the competition by storm, flying home with the winner’s trophy firmly in her grasp.
