LOCAL squash sensation Lauren Briggs recently won her fifth WISPA Tour title at the NSC Series in Kuala Lumpur.
Twenty-nine-year-old Briggs, from Chingford, was seeded number one for the event, and she didn’t disappoint, as she conceded just three games on her way to the final, before sweeping aside fifth seed Sharon Wee in commanding fashion.
Briggs pummelled her opponent in the first two games of the final, conceding just seven points, while she had to stave off a late fightback before taking the third 11-8.
The Connaught club player headed into the tournament on the back of a first round defeat to world number four Natalie Grinham in the CIMB KL Open. Despite her straight games loss, she gave her opponent a real scare and could easily have claimed a huge scalp.
Her confidence was evident, as she made light work of Misaki Kobayashi in the first round. She was made to sweat in round two by Lisa Camilleri, however, as she battled back from two games down to roar through, while she was much more convincing in her last four clash.
After joining the WISPA (Women’s International Squ-ash Players Association) Tour in 1999, Briggs has steadily worked her way up the world rankings to an all-time high of 19.
