CHINGFORD gunned down local rivals Fives & Heronians in Division One’s derby clash at the weekend.

A stunning unbeaten knock of 98 from Fives batsman Gary Edwards enabled the visitors to clear the 200 mark, but equally brilliant contributions from openers Robert Whitfield (91) and Jamie Hill (89 not out) saw Chingford sail to their target of 211.

Ben MacGregor had earlier claimed three wickets, including that of the explosive Rahul Bhome (39) at the death, while Chingford lost just two wickets on their way to victory.

Elsewhere, in the Premier Division, defending champions Wanstead succumbed to a 40-run defeat to Brentwood, despite half centuries from Adnan Akram and Daniel Walters.

There was better news for Woodford Wells, however, who blasted their way past Chelmsford, despite facing a daunting target of 269 for victory.

Hassan Chowdhury (77) got things going during the chase before Michael Richardson took it upon himself to smash the bowling to pieces on his way to a terrific century.

Meanwhile, South Woodford’s Carl Greenidge managed a superb four-wicket haul as they dispatched Colchester & East Essex on Saturday.

Julian Russell’s fifty helped the local side to a total of 234, before Greenidge took centre stage, with two wickets apiece for Garry Neicho and Simon Correya.

In Division Two, Buckhurst Hill slipped to a four-wicket loss against Hadleigh & Thundersley.

Consistent scoring was the order of the day for Hill, although nobody went on to make a big score, and the hosts were able to knock off the runs with several overs to spare.

An excellent opening stand of 108 from West Essex pair Farhad Saleem (72) and Hijaz Baig (53) set the tone as they overcame local rivals Woodford Green.

Green were in trouble at 90 for five, with 233 required, but the lower order dug their heels in and almost inspired the team to victory, falling just 22 runs short.

Epping slumped to defeat at the hands of Old Brentwoods, despite the best efforts of Jacob Ellis (57) and Terry Preston (2-32), while Ongar played out an entertaining draw with Southend-on-Sea.
