WALTHAM Forest’s own woman warrior has won her first boxing title as a senior.
Shakira Ley beat 2007 champion Claire Teeling from the Royal Navy by 12 points to nil in Manchester for the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) belt.
Ley totally dominated from the start with several three and four shot combinations that completely overpowered her opponent.
Club Secretary Ian Cuddy was in jubilant mood after an outstanding display of boxing.
He said: “Shakira will now train hard for the next three months and will take on an exhausting training schedule to prepare her for the coming season.”
The female competition has grown in popularity recently.
There has been a fifty percent increase in entrants on 2008, and there is also speculation that women fighters will compete at the 2012 Olympics.
The Waltham Forest boxing club has spaces available for any girls or women who would like to try boxing. Contact the club on 0208 523 5133. Coaching is provided by two ABA qualified female coaches, Karen and Winsome.
