WOODFORD’S women are on course for an immediate return to the top flight of the UK Athletics League after they won the second fixture of the season at Lee Valley.

There were a number of notable individual performances as Woodford pushed Enfield into second place, taking their lead at the top of Division Two to four points from Blackheath.

The team cleaned up in the hammer with Lucy Marshall and Sarah Smith both emerging triumphant, while it was a similar story in the triple jump as Stephanie Aneto (A string) and Hannah Frankson doubled up for two victories.

Marshall was victorious in the A string, while Jo Duncan won the shot putt.

Woodford scooped another first place in the field as Ayamba Akim’s leap of 1.70m in the high jump saw off the rest of the competition.

Kim Murray won the long jump, while on the track Katie Skelding topped the field in the B string 400m race and Kat Gunderson won the B string 3000m.

Ruth Brereton’s clinical finishing job on the anchor leg of the 4x400m earned the team their final victory of the day.

Meanwhile, Woodford’s men came within nine points of winning the second BAL Premiership fixture of the season in Manchester.

The result means they sit just three and a half points behind current league leaders Newham.

Mark Dry, stepping in for the unavailable Andy Frost and fresh from his England Under 23 Championship victory last week, made it two wins in as many weeks in the hammer throw.

Sprinter Tim Abeyie followed up a second place in the 100m with a win in the 200m race, while Graham Hedman produced an even better performance than his club mate in winning the B event.

In the B string 400m, Musa Audu, who won bronze with the Nigerian 4x400m team at the Athens Olympics, placed second, while in the A 110m hurdles Dan Davis was also edged into second spot.

Woodford’s 4x100m team of Davis, Ramone Smith, Jamie Wright and Abeyie took victory with a time of 41.44 secs, sealing an impressive outing for the local club.
