WOODFORD'S athletes emerged with an impressive haul of three victories and seven medals at the Aviva UK Championships and World Championship Trials in Birmingham at the weekend.

Sprinter Joice Maduaka stormed home to take the 100m title, while Nusrat Ceesay triumphed in the 400m hurdles, and Emeka Udechuku's efforts won him the discus event.

Maduaka, who represented Great Britain at the Beijing Olympic Games last year, recaptured some of her best form to beat off the competition from an array of talented athletes.

At the age of 35, Maduaka is in the autumn of her career, but she shows no sign of slowing, as she breezed through the heats in a rapid time of 11.45sec, which proved to be her fastest time of the weekend.

Another faultless performance in the semis led to a middle lane in the final, and she went on to pip Kadi Ann Thomas of Milton Keynes to the title by seven-hundredths of a second.

Ceesay's excellent performance over the hurdles along one lap of the track was perhaps the most notable, however, as it was her first senior title.

The 28-year-old produced a stunning personal best time of 57.13sec to see off the challenge of Hannah Douglas to win the event.

In the discus, Udechuku produced the winning throw with just his second attempt of the competition. The former European Junior Champion's effort of 56.93m was over a metre further than his closest challenger and secured his fifth national senior title. He later went on to take bronze in the shot putt.

Meanwhile, Beijing Games' finalist Sarah Claxton was second in the 100m hurdles, as she was edged out by Olympic heptathlete Jessica Ennis.

In the men's event, Callum Priestley enjoyed the perfect preparation for the European U23 Championships with a silver medal, while Jo Duncan claimed a bronze in the women's shot.

Elsewhere, Woodford's Alex Cornwell produced a fine display of middle-distance running as he won the 1500m in the under 20 age group at the English Schools Championships with a new personal best of 3min 50.95sec.
