A THRILLING match was won by four shots when Dennyside Association BC took on Woodford BC.
Dennyside won 111-107 but the ferocity of competition of the charity match was put aside afterwards as members from both clubs joined together to raise £1,688 for the East London Handicapped Playcentre, which provides facilities for children with physical and sensory handicaps.
Dennyside, led by their president Reg Baines, draw members from bowls clubs across the country who participate in charity matches to raise funds for worthy causes.
Woodford bowlers are looking forward to Dennyside's return for their annual bi-annual match in 2011.
The Mayor of Redbridge Thomas Chan and his wife recently visited Woodford Bowls Club to present the Churchill Cup to Brian Kelly of Wanstead Bowls Club.
They even tried out the sport for themselves.
Meanwhile, nearby Wanstead Central BC recorded their highest ever shot total when they defeated Goodmayes BC 101-28 in the Alfa Group Triples League.
Central's ladies were involved in a nail biting thriller which saw them emerge victorious over Griffin Ladies BC by a single shot.
The match was decided on overall shot difference after both teams won two rinks a-piece.
Angela Hudson trailed the jack into the ditch which allowed Central to win by the tightest of margins.
They will face Connaught Ladies BC in the next round.
Central gained revenge over Clayhall BC when they defeated them by 62-56 shots and they won all three rinks in a tightly contested Ilford and District League encounter.
Clayhall previously beat Central 63-48 in the Redbridge Afternoon League.
Central were beaten by the Met Police Chigwell by three shots losing 33-36 in a Clark White League fixture, winning a rink and losing a rink.
Meanwhile, Bantham and Ongar convincingly beat Elm Park 91-64 in the Brentwood and District League.
There was also success for Bantham and Ongar when they won 53-46 against Much Hadham in the Essex and Herts League and there was also victory away at rivals Epping where Bantham and Ongar won 38-25 in the Harlow and District Ladies Triples League.
Bantham and Ongar also were victorious against Rosedale 81-56 in the Senior Citizen's League.
Elsewhere, it was a mixed week for Wadham BC.
The ladies team lost by one shot 12-13 to near neighbours Woodford whereas the men won both rinks against Buckhurst Hill in the Clarke White League.
Wadham's Thursday 'A' Fours Team beat the Buckhurst Hill 'B' team 18-15 but suffered defeat 26-12 to Orford House.
