WOMEN from a tennis club in Chingford have been bidding to become national champions.

Members of the WimX Academy at the Connaught Club participated in the final of the Aegon Team Tennis Competition in Roehampton, south-west London, where they took on some of the best in the country.

Georgina Bastick, Abi Claydon, Faye Watts, Aimee Daly, Katie Barker and Eva Dench took part in the contest at the National Tennis Centre.

They are all under-18 girls who live in Chingford and the surrounding areas.

The club have also qualified for the quarter-final of the National Ladies competition after they beat Roehampton 5-1 in a play-off match.

The national finals take place in Bournemouth during September.

Meanwhile, there were celebrations at Whitehall Lawn Tennis Club in Chingford during the annual club finals.

Martyn Herman won the men's singles 4-2 after his opponent Andy Giles retired injured.

Lynn O'Brien beat Cathy Brazier 6-3, 6-2 to win the ladies' singles, while Mike O'Brien won against Richard Dunn 6-2, 6-2 to take the veterans' singles.

Adrian Williams defeated Chris Wells 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to win the boys'

singles and Lois Kane won 6-3, 6-0 against Jessica O'Brien to scoop the girls' singles competition.

Caroline Erics and Melanie Woodward overcame Julie Knight and Lynn O'Brien 6-3, 6-0 to win the ladies' doubles, while Julie Knight and Chris Seenath defeated Lynn O'Brien and Dave Brennan 6-3, 6-0 in the mixed doubles.

Andy Walker and Ian Green saw off Martyn Herman and Andy Giles to win the men's doubles. Unfortunately, Giles retired injured.

Adrian Williams and Sam Miller won the boys' doubles after beating Jack Flood and Paul Meaden 6-4, 6-4.

A tense tennis final was won by Jack Hollywood who overcame Corey Clarke at a competition in Loughton.

Hollywood, 11, beat Clarke, also 11, by two sets, 6-1, 7-6, winning the tie break 7-4 to take the junior boys' singles final at the Avenue Lawn Tennis Club in The Avenue.
