WANSTEAD CENTRAL Bowls Club were crowned champions of the Alpha Group Triples Central Division after beating Royal British Legion BC in their final match of the season.
Central headed in to the contest requiring a minimum of four points to clinch the title, and they delivered in style, winning two of the three rinks contested for five points.
The team of Keith Lloyd, George Curtis and Rod Hudson won their game comfortably, while Len Welton, Steve Walsh and Paul Whellams edged their all-important rink.
The club have qualified for the semi-final play-offs, which are to be staged at St Chads BC.
Central then rounded off their Foresters Triples League with a 68-58 win over Aveling, while the final game of the Redbridge Afternoon League ended in a 45-31 defeat to Aldersbrook.
Elsewhere, at the Bowls National Championships at Worthing, Central’s team of Bob Druce, Ron Hudson and Paul Whellams made an early exit, as they lost 21-10 to Devon’s B trio.
Central’s other team, which included Hudson and Whellams as well as Angela Hudson and Maureen Norgate, were also defeated, going down 25-20.
Meanwhile, Wadham’s A team eased to a 29-15 win against Victoria Park in the Thursday Fours. The B team also triumphed.
Bantham & Ongar member Keith Lodge’s run in the Chelmsford & District singles competition came to an end when he was beaten by Joe Embling of Tillingham in the quarter-finals.
The club endured a heavy defeat at the hands of Writtle B in their final game of the Chelmsford & District League.
In the Senior Citizens League Bantham & Ongar overcame Rosehill, while in the Harlow & District Triples League the ladies triumphed in both rinks.
