SIX years ago Waltham Abbey were plying their trade in the Essex Senior League, but now they are embarking on their first season in the Ryman Premier.
The club's captain Lee White has seen the Essex side rise up through the leagues and, while he was once watched by one man and his dog, Abbey are now playing in front of hundreds of supporters each week.
The defender, who signed from Hertford Town in the 2003/04 season, said: “How long have I been playing for Waltham Abbey? Too long. I remember playing against Southend Manor in front of a few people, whereas now we're playing in front of possibly 800 or 1,000 every week.”
The fact that the majority of teams in the Ryman Premier are better supported than those below, has led to White plead with Waltham Abbey fans to get behind their team.
“I've noticed a few more people wearing Waltham Abbey shirts in the town, but I'd like to see more local people going to the games. We are the biggest non-league club in the area compared to Ware, Cheshunt and Enfield,” the 27-year-old said.
Waltham Abbey secured their promotion to the Ryman Premier for the first time by beating Concord Rangers 5-4 in a penalty shoot out after a 1-1 draw in the Division One North play-off final last season.
Speaking about the achievement, White, known as Chalky, said: “It just shows what can be achieved if you have a good bunch of lads who want to play for each other.
“Most of the guys live in Waltham Abbey and we socialise off the pitch as well as on it. We play golf together and go for nights out.”
