CONNAUGHT bowls club enjoyed a successful finals day as the curtain comes down on their season.

Jim Wilson won the men’s championship with a 21-16 victory over Tim Mould on the day, while Sylvia Bloomfield was crowned ladies’ champion after beating Pat Watson in the final.

Barbara Low became the first lady to win the Gunn trophy as she defeated Neil Harvey three sets to two. Beaten singles finalists Mould and Watson combined to win the mixed pairs.

Roger Taylor won the Shadforth Two Wood competition, while Bloomfield was back on the winning trail, emerging victorious in the ladies’ handicap. Peter Platten won the men’s equivalent.

Taylor also triumphed in the veterans’ event, while Mould teamed up with Peter Galley to win the men’s pairs. Bloomfield and Beryl Barton won the ladies’ competition.

Mould, John Gray and Janet Gray won the club’s triples, while Moyna Avery and Morris Hadley won their respective junior trophies. Derek Marshall won The Helson, while Carol Crafer won the Fixed Jack.

Elsewhere, Bantham & Ongar bowls club’s Keith Lodge was the star of their finals day.

He participated in six finals and was a winner of six titles. He triumphed in the men’s championship, Three Wood, Two Wood and Fixed Jack on his own. He then teamed up with Alex Kinnison and Mike Nash to win the triples, before joining forces with Valerie Finbow and Estelle Bell to win the mixed triples.

Bell won the ladies’ championship and two other titles, while Finbow also won three titles – two in tandem with Bell.

Another bowler who performed well was Francis Czuba. He competed in three finals and won the mixed pairs with Finbow.

Gerald Murfitt won the novice event, while Len Watson and George Miller combined to win the men’s pairs. Brenda Perrett triumphed in the Fixed Jack; Jackie Brown won the handicap event, while Doreen Oddy triumphed in the Three Wood.
