OLD LOUGHTONIANS ladies racked up another impressive win on the road as they came from behind to beat Northampton Saints at the weekend.
The team were made to work for their victory, and they were up against it as early as the fifth minute, when Saints punished a mistake in defence to take the lead.
The players came back strongly, but they were denied by some good goalkeeping before the break.
It was a similar pattern after the interval, but Loughts eventually found their shooting sticks. A foul on the line following a penalty corner resulted in a penalty stroke, and Rachel Dunning stepped up to slot the ball home for the equaliser.
By now wave after wave of Loughts’ attacks were battering the Saints’ defences, and the all-important second breakthrough finally arrived on 54 minutes, courtesy of another penalty stroke, with Dunning making no mistake.
Loughts take on Horsham at home on Saturday, while they travel to Premier side Reading in the EH Cup on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Old Loughts men bulldozed division top dogs Southgate in their England Hockey League Conference East clash at the weekend.
It took the local side just five minutes to break the deadlock when Alex Jennings bundled the ball in. James Stedman doubled the advantage, and Jennings helped himself to another from the penalty spot.
The game was put beyond doubt with a Leroy Phillips wonder goal.
Loughts travel to Indian Gymkhana on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Waltham Forest ladies will be disappointed with a home defeat to Southend last weekend.
Southend pulled ahead when an attacker volleyed the ball high into the net from a rebound.
Forest responded well, enjoying prolonged spells of dominance, but they were unable to take their chances, and they were punished in the worse way possible, a deflected shot handing the visitors victory.
Forest travel to Sevenoaks this weekend.
