CHINGFORD moved joint top of London Division One North after a 48-5 win at Rochford.
Chingford’s first try came from a great forward drive, with Luke Campbell eventually touching down after the maul was driven 25 yards.
Campbell was unlucky with the conversion attempt, but added a further three points with a well-taken penalty a few minutes later.
Next to score was the returning Mathew Lockwood, playing at fly-half, with Campbell again converting.
The final try of the half came when Tom Child intercepted a pass and ran half the length of the field to score, Campbell again converting.
The tries continued to come after the break. Lockwood scored his second try of the day which Campbell converted, before Welsh loose forward Chris Moore scored his first for the club, Campbell again kicking the conversion. David Knight, a player whose brother currently plays for Rochford, was next to score. Campbell once again added the extras, before Lockwood finished off the scoring with his third of the day.
Stand-in skipper Steve Piper said: “It should have been more, but we are happy to come away with the two points.”
Woodford could not carry the momentum of three tries in 10 minutes against Staines last week into Saturday’s contest with Letchworth.
The visitors were able to benefit from some indiscipline from the hosts, scrum-half Johnny Smith and captain Robbie Connell both receiving yellow cards.
Letchworth converted three penalties as they opened up a lead.
A drop goal and an unconverted try put paid to Woodford’s hopes of victory, although the home side did have something to shout about when Huw Levis went over for an excellent individual try.
The defeat – final score 17-7 – sees Woodford hold on to sixth place in London Division One North, although they are some way from the leading pack.
Meanwhile, there were plenty of encouraging signs for Eton Manor as they played out a 9-9 draw with division high-fliers Staines.
m There were wins for Woodford’s youth squads too.
The U15s A team buried Shelford beneath 10 tries to win 64-0.
In muddy conditions, Somers touched down three times and Piras twice. Bukenya, Sheehey, Grogan, Matautia and Cooper-Rendu added to the score. Davies kicked seven conversions.
Elsewhere, Woodford B beat Old Dartfordians B 33-17.
Vuckovic, Ellisdon, Foot and Jones all scored tries. Humphries added four conversions.
