WEST ESSEX’S table tennis team produced an inspired display to spring an upset against Basildon.
The local side went in to their Essex Inter-League clash as underdogs, having endured a 6-3 defeat in their previous game, while their opponents had enjoyed a comprehensive 8-1 victory.
But West Essex number three Russell Stone led the charge, winning both his singles games and a doubles tie. Paul Pells and Ray Brown each won a singles match and combined to win the final doubles game to give West Essex an unexpected 6-3 win.
