EPPING golfer Simon Khan enjoyed the biggest win of his career when he made a storming late charge to top the field at the most prestigious event on the European Tour, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
World number 471 Khan only received a late invitation to compete in the event last Monday, but he made the most of his opportunity, producing the greatest final day comeback in the tournament’s history after making up a deficit of seven shots on Sunday.
Khan was tied for 13th at the beginning of the day, but compiled an impressive round of 66 to finish on six under par, including a superb 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th which would ultimately win him the title, from Luke Donald and Fredrik Andersson Hed.
The victory is Khan’s second of his career, after winning the Celtic Manor Wales Open back in 2004, and will earn him a five-year exemption on the European Tour and three years at the British Open.
The 750,000 euro prize also sees Khan soar up to number seven in the Race to Dubai standings and means he will earn a place in the field for the season-ending Dubai World Championship.
The Epping resident said afterwards: “It’s amazing to win any event on tour, but this is unbelievable.
“To win this event is the reason I started playing. It inspires me every time I play here.”
Chigwell golfer Oliver Fisher finished tied for 65th.
