TWO young female golfers from the same club fought their way through a prestigious tournament, and then went head-to-head in the semi-final.

Daisy Dyer and Sophie Madden usually play at West Essex Golf Club in Bury Road, Chingford.

But the young pair were competitors at the Essex Ladies Championship event at Five Lakes club in Maldon, recently.

In the end it was the experienced 20-year-old Dyer who won the matchplay semi-final between the pair, four holes up with three to play.

Daisy then went on to win the tournament outright.

But Madden has plenty of reasons to be proud, as she is just 13-years-old.

The Chigwell teenager shot a course record seven-under par round during the three-day event, which featured an eagle.

“It felt really good because it was the lowest score I’ve ever shot,” Sophie told Guardian Series Sport.

“I was just trying to concentrate. By the end, I was getting cross for not making birdies when I usually only do that if I miss par.”

Sophie’s course record round came on the very first day of the event, held over May 21-23.

Now the teen’s scorecard is framed and hanging in the clubhouse at Five Lakes.

The next round yielded a two-over par round for Sophie.

In the first matchplay elimination round, Sophie came back from four down with six to play and secured an improbable final hole victory.

The youngster said she was tired by the time she met Dyer in the semi-final, two matches later.

“I was quite tired on the last day when I played Daisy.

“She is a good player. I was alright but my driving was not so good. My short game got better, but it had been a lot of golf.”

Now Sophie is gearing up to take part in the under-13s English girls’ championship at Market Rasen golf course, in July.

Lucky for her that school work can sometimes be late in. “I practice every day and my school has been understanding so that when I’ve had a competition, I can do my schoolwork later.”
