The West Essex Veterans A table tennis team gained their second win of their monthly Essex inter-league matches.

Paul Pells, Russell Stone and Ray Brown beat Basildon 5-4, with five matches going to a fifth and deciding game.

Firstly, Stone and Brown lost the opening doubles 12-10 in the fifth game. Pells then won the first singles by three games to one, before Brown won his singles by the same score.

Stone was two games ahead in his singles, only for his opponent to draw level at two games all. In a very close, deciding game, Stone won 12-10.

In the next doubles, Pells and Brown fought back to two games all, but lost in the fifth and deciding game.

Pells then had an easy win against Basildon’s Trevor Collins.

Stone lost in four games to Paul Brown to make the match score 4-3 to West Essex.

Ray Brown then played Chris Aukett and again the match went to a deciding game. At deuce in the fifth game, Aukett had three chances to win, but at 13-13, Brown took the lead, then won the next point for a 15-13 win.

Basildon won the final doubles, again in the fifth game, but it was not enough, as West Essex were victorious at 5-4.
