OLD Loughtonians’ men’s indoor hockey team qualified for the Super Sixes finals to be held at Wembley Arena on January 30 by finishing in fourth after the second weekend of matches in the National Indoor Premier Division.

It is the fourth time in five years that the Essex club have managed that feat, and they will be hoping to put on an impressive show against the country’s premier sides.

Saturday saw the men take on eventual league winners East Grinstead in their first match of the weekend.

Grinstead, a team packed with internationals, had too much for Loughts in the end, running out 11-3 victors.

However, in the second match of the day, Loughts bounced back brilliantly to beat St Albans 5-3.

On Sunday their first match was against a much-fancied Loughborough outfit, but it was the Chigwell side that took the plaudits with a 3-1 win.

Their final game of the league was against Bowdon and, in a game they should have won, were defeated 4-3.

But with 14 points and well clear of fifth-placed Canterbury, Loughts had done enough to tee up a semi-final meeting with East Grinstead at Wembley.

The ladies’ indoor team did not enjoy similar success, only managing to notch up two wins over the two weekends, which sees them relegated from National Indoor Division One League.

The indoor success of the club was not limited to the adult section though, with both the U18 girls and U18 boys teams also reaching the National Indoor Finals this coming weekend.
