In-form Orient striker David Mooney insists he is not proving anyone wrong after forming a potent partnership with Kevin Lisbie.

Mooney struck twice in the FA Cup win at Alfreton which took his tally to five goals in as many matches.

It has been a dramatic turnaround in the Irish forward’s fortunes after coming under criticism from some supporters over the last year.

But the 28-year-old, who has often been played out of his favoured position in attack, insists he is just trying to prove his own worth at Brisbane Road.

Mooney said: “It’s just one of those things. I don’t think I’m proving anyone wrong.

“You just want to prove yourself right really and I knew I would once I played up front.

“Lisbie is a great foil.

“He’s strong, good in the air and links the play great.

“I just play off him really and he’s the one who gives me the freedom to play. In terms of that it’s been really good.”

Mooney and Lisbie have forged a superb front line for the O’s which has been one of the major factors in their recent run of wins.

The pair have netted ten goals between them in the last six matches and Mooney admits it is a pleasure to play alongside the experienced striker.

Mooney said: “It’s been exciting. Me and Kevin have formed a great partnership. He’s got five or six goals and I’ve got five goals in the last few weeks.

“We’ve teamed up really well and to be honest I probably should have put him in once or twice [against Alfreton].

“On another day we could have had six or seven goals but it’s another four and we’re in the next round so that’s the most important thing.”

Orient have been handed a trip to Championship club Hull City in the third round next month and Mooney claims the players are happy with the draw.

The former Reading marksman said: “Everybody’s pleased with the draw because it’s a game where on a good day you can go there and if not get a win get a draw so we’ll be looking forward to it.

“They were in the Premier League two or three years ago and it’s a lovely ground and they’re a good club so it’s a good game for us.

“It would be fantastic not just for the fans but also the players and staff to go on a run. It’s a great competition and obviously for the chairman and the board as well it’s a big money spinner so thankfully we’ve got through, that’s the most important thing.

“We’ll look forward to Hull in the new year when that comes around but we’ve got some big games coming up now over Christmas.

“We’ll be looking to kick on with our form in the league after six wins on the bounce so it’s onwards and upwards.”

The O’s have won six consecutive games for the first time since 1961 and Mooney has set his sights on extending this run at the weekend when they travel to Bury in League One.

Mooney said: “I don’t know when the last time was that Leyton Orient won six games in a row so it’s massive for us as players and confidence was sky high even when we went 1-0 down.

“We didn’t really panic and thankfully [Dean] Coxy tucked a great goal in and that seemed to settle us down.

“If we had kicked on in the second half we might have made life a lot easier for ourselves but for the neutral it was a good game.

“It’s massively important to keep the run going this weekend.

“We’ve managed to turn our season around and we’ve pushed up the table.

“We’re mid-table now and if we can nick one or two more wins before Christmas that will put us right up in the mix over that busy period so that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”
