A GOAL from West Ham United striker Freddie Sears was not enough to stop England being knocked out of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
Sears struck with a 68th minute penalty as the Young Lions thrashed Greece 3-0 in Liberec, but the victory was in vain as Italy beat the Czech Republic to qualify for the semi-finals at England's expense.
Injured Hammers team-mate James Tomkins missed the game.
Despite missing out on a place in the last-four, England have still qualified for next summer's FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.
Both Sears and Tomkins, along with Irons colleagues Junior Stanislas and Jordan Spence - both of whom are currently on the first-team tour of North America - will all hope to be involved in the tournament, which takes place in September 2009.
