SUNDERLAND boss Steve Bruce has revealed he is in early discussions with West Ham skipper Lucas Neill about a move to the Stadium of Light.

Thirty-one-year-old Neill has been a free agent since his contract at Upton Park expired in June, and he has been frequently linked with a move away in recent weeks.

It had been thought Turkish side Galatasaray were showing the most interest, but Bruce's admission suggests the Australian could leave to join a club closer to home.

Bruce was quoted as saying: “We have had a little conversation to see where Lucas is at. We will see where he is, where his mind is at and go from there.

“He is experienced, has played in the Premier League and is on a free transfer, so that is the attraction.”

Neill, who has made 89 appearances for the Hammers since he joined from Blackburn in 2007, turned down the offer of a new deal from the club back in June.
