JORDAN Spence is the latest talent to roll off the West Ham Academy conveyor belt, having made his debut for the club in the end-of-season draw against Manchester City at the weekend.
The young defender was introduced for the final five minutes of the contest, but could yet prove to play a far more pivotal role next season.
Spence, a tall, versatile defender, has spent most of the past two campaigns out on loan, enjoying spells at Leyton Orient last season, pictured, and Scunthorpe United this year.
But he has returned to the fold at Upton Park and is keen to stake his claim for a more permanent place in the first team.
“I’m just really happy to make my debut,” said the Woodford-born defender. “He (Gianfranco Zola, manager) just wished me luck and told me to enjoy myself.
“I’ve been looking towards making my debut for a little while now, since I came back. I’ll kick on as soon as I get back.”
Spence admitted the challenge against City was very different to those he experienced at Brisbane Road and Glanford Park.
“I was at Orient and then Scunthorpe and played in some big games against some big sides. But nothing like this and nothing to that scale, so it’s a step up for me and a progression,” added the 19-year-old.
