SCOTT PARKER was the only Hammer to miss out on England's final 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Goalkeeper Robert Green and defender Matthew Upson were both included in the group that Fabio Capello believes can end the country's 44-year wait for the biggest prize in football.

Upson, who has been used extensively by the Italian during his time in charge of the national team, was omitted for the two recent friendly victories over Mexico and Japan, although it appears Capello had seen enough in previous games to have invited him on board the plane to Johannesburg.

Parker was one of several players not to feature in either match, but he did not enjoy the same fate as his team-mate.

With Gareth Barry injured and Tom Huddlestone, James Milner and Michael Carrick largely unimpressive in the centre of midfield against Mexico at Wembley last week, West Ham's player of the season seemed a good bet to have his chance to shine against the Japanese.

But, once again, he was left out, sparking a debate as to why he was included in the provisional squad of 30 in the first place.

Green, on the other hand, enjoyed plenty of time between the sticks and impressed against Mexico. He will now battle it out with David James and Joe Hart for the number one jersey.

Meanwhile, West Ham are expected to announce Avram Grant as their new manager this week.
