WEST HAM take a one goal advantage into the break at Everton after Jonathan Spector struck midway through the first half.
The American fired home from 15 yards after Luis Boa Morte had reached the byline and dragged the ball back into the midfielder's path.
The Hammers had been under the cosh for much of the first quarter, but the goal eased any nerves that may have been lingering and could even have been boasting a two-goal lead, with the returning Freddie Piquionne directing a header against the post from five yards when he really ought to have scored.
